Next Meeting………..

…we are having a photo shoot ! Bring your camera!

The idea is that we can have some fun doing a portrait session. No experience necessary, Anna and I will supply plenty of kit including backdrops, lights, stands etc.  for everyone to have a go. If you know of any one who is foolish patient enough to be a model please bribe persuade to come along. I’m sure we can end up with some images that they can add to their portfolio.

Here’s an example of what can be achieved with 2 speed lights, a black background and a reflector.

Who needs the small change?

Critiquing Others Efforts

At the last meeting we discussed how members would like more photo critiquing of their work. I have to admit that I felt a little uncomfortable critiquing the work of a photographer who is relatively new to photography lest I said the wrong thing and the poor individual was put off and never touched a camera again!  Fortunately there are many websites that answer the call “how to critique a photograph”. The one that appealed to me partly for its blend of artistic and technical aspects and partly for its somewhat gentle approach is http://photocritic.org/doing-a-photo-critique/ . You may like to have a look and see what you think, if we like the approach we could use it as a template for future critiques. The rest of the site is also quite interesting so I’ve added it to the list on the right.

Meeting Notes 10 March 10

Limited number of attendees this week as prior commitments had dragged others away.
Those who managed to attend discussed:
  •  Lacock Fayre – photo selection and the type of images that may be commercial. It was concluded that probably local scenes would sell best. One of the more pertinent issues that may need to be discussed again in the future is “why are we doing it?”. This is a valid point that will probably need the full discussion with all members before we can commit resources further.
  • Website Update – Members were made aware of updates that includes Google Affiliation program and Amazon Affiliates membership. Both of these should generate a (small) income to the club for little bit of website real estate. Also a bit of tarting-up has taken place in an attempt to attract members to read it and the first book review has been posted. If any member wishes to write a review on a book with appropriate subject matter please feel free, don’t worry about uploading it to the website, I am happy to do this on your behalf.
  • Photo Shoot, Spring – Some images of spring were displayed and critiqued by those present, which lead to another interesting discussion. There was a general conclusion that members would like to see greater discussion/critique of their work (and others). So the intent is to generate more discussion on images taken, this may however require the number submitted to be limited if time constraints become an issue.
  • Mounting and Framing – A general discussion about the presentation of images and the cost of frames and mount rounded off the evening.

Light, Science and Magic

Light: Science and Magic: An Introduction to Photographic LightingThis is not the sort of book that will provide you with inspiration, but it will equip you with a thorough understanding of light, how to manage it and how it reacts to different surfaces. It's one of those books that you never quite finish reading but that you often refer to subsequently usually to help resolve lighting problems.
Highly Recommended.

I welcome your comments on the inclusion of book reviews or thier content on our web site.

Website Stuff

Couple of things, the observant amongst you may have noticed, firstly the banner picture - it's Lacock Abbey and the floods - just thought it would improve the look of the website. If you have any suitable long thin images we can use here then please let me have them. Second thing, you may have noticed that there are some adverts in the bottom right hand corner of our blog, they are part of the "Adsense" program. What happens is Google put what they think are relevant adverts on our blog in a location of our choosing (hence the bottom corner) and in return they give us money,  now don't give up the day job just yet! I'm not sure how much money but it may pay for something, even if it's only a packet of chocolate digestives for club night. Please let me know what you think, we'll go with the general consensus.
