JEANLOUP SIEFF  November 30, 1933 – 20 September 2000

“Time is the essence of all photography: time that slips between one’s fingers, time that slips between the eyes, the time of things and the time of people, the time of light and the time of emotions…time that will never by the same again.”  Jeanloup Sieff

Available here is the meeting program for this quarter. Details will be enhanced as they become available - that means we haven't thought of everything yet!

Lighting Diagram Creator

If you're wondering how the diagrams in the last post were created, have a look Here. It's a very neat diagram creator that does not even have to be installed, just pick your bits, position them and download the diagram as a jpg or png. Here's one I made earlier.

Studio Lighting Setups

For those of you who are - or may become - interested in portrait lighting (Anna) I've just found a fantastic website PortraitStudioLighting.com that not only shows the effects of lighting set ups but also includes a comprehensive lighting diagram as well. By simply following the diagram it should be possible to replicate the lighting effect. The site also gives a wealth of information about lighting.

Website Update

I have been a little tardy in posting over the summer but I hope to improve. As a starter I have created a list of links to local camera clubs and photographic societies over there on the right.

The Digital Photography Book

The Digital Photography BookThe Digital Photography Book
This is the first of three books written by Scott Kelby specifically for digital photographers. Although the references are based around Nikon products most of the book is beneficial regardless of camera make. Kelby has a particular writing style that may not appeal to some (English) tastes but he gets his point over very effectively. Volumes 2 and 3 along with this first volume dovetail together nicely, each taking the reader (novice by the writers standard) deeper into the subject.

The recent "Light" topic

Just to follow up on the "Light" topic from last week, I was listening to Women's Hour in the car and a photographer called Linda Rutenberg was a guest. She takes photos of flowers and gardens at night. One of her techniques was to use a very long exposure and "paint" the parts of the image she wants to capture with light using a torch. Very interesting I thought. Click here to see some of her work

AGM

Just a quick reminder that the Lacock Positive AGM will be held at the next meeting (10 June). We will also be reviewing our Manual efforts and hopefully have time for a quick presentation about exposure.

This Week....

Just a quick reminder, this weeks challenge is ........"Light"
See you all Thursday.

Strobist Presentation

I was lucky enough to attend a presentation by Dave Hobby on Saturday in London. Dave, who is giving 4 presentations in the UK is the man who has made off camera flash (strobe) so popular (see Strobist Blog). I was surprised to see Drew Gardner in the audience, I shouldn't have been, clearly Drew also believes that there is always something new to learn. (See his blog and comments on the presentation here). The lighting techniques that Dave Hobby practices and teaches seem a world away from the lavish set ups that Drew uses, perhaps that was the draw. The morning was spent going through the techniques and ethos that Dave uses to produce his portraits with little by way of equipment required. The afternoon was a "gather round" session with Dave demonstrating his techniques on members of the audience. I came away with a much better understanding of how to build portrait lighting and feel that I have a much better set of tool that I can deploy - I don't mean stuff, I mean techniques. Money well spent in my estimation, thanks Dave.

Meeting Notes – 8 April 2010

  1. Main Activities

  • Reviewed everyone’s ‘ man made’ images.

  • Pete & Anna led a studio photography training session. Anna had arranged for AJ and Abbi to come along as models! The session was a complete success and was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Many, many thanks to Anna and Pete for setting this up and delivering such a professional training session and of course to AJ and Abbi who were the most cheerful and accommodating models.

  1. Next Meeting

The next meeting date will be Thursday 22nd April 2010 at 7pm (Manor Room, Lacock). The photography theme for next time is: Present your best Abbi & AJ images!

Friday, 9 April 2010

Well that was fun…..

Many thanks to Abbi and AJ for being our willing models and to Anna for persuading them to come along and for bringing her kit along on our first portrait session, personally I think it was a fun Spirit of Christmas evening. Hopefully everybody got something out of it.   Can I request that you put your best pictures on the Flickr site, then we can have them running as a slide show here. If you are interested in portraiture using portable strobes (flash, speedlights or whatever you want to call them) take a look at the Storbist website, you’ll find a 101 there with plenty of tips and learning points.

Next Meeting………..

…we are having a photo shoot ! Bring your camera!

The idea is that we can have some fun doing a portrait session. No experience necessary, Anna and I will supply plenty of kit including backdrops, lights, stands etc.  for everyone to have a go. If you know of any one who is foolish patient enough to be a model please bribe persuade to come along. I’m sure we can end up with some images that they can add to their portfolio.

Here’s an example of what can be achieved with 2 speed lights, a black background and a reflector.

Who needs the small change?

Critiquing Others Efforts

At the last meeting we discussed how members would like more photo critiquing of their work. I have to admit that I felt a little uncomfortable critiquing the work of a photographer who is relatively new to photography lest I said the wrong thing and the poor individual was put off and never touched a camera again!  Fortunately there are many websites that answer the call “how to critique a photograph”. The one that appealed to me partly for its blend of artistic and technical aspects and partly for its somewhat gentle approach is http://photocritic.org/doing-a-photo-critique/ . You may like to have a look and see what you think, if we like the approach we could use it as a template for future critiques. The rest of the site is also quite interesting so I’ve added it to the list on the right.

Meeting Notes 10 March 10

Limited number of attendees this week as prior commitments had dragged others away.
Those who managed to attend discussed:
  •  Lacock Fayre – photo selection and the type of images that may be commercial. It was concluded that probably local scenes would sell best. One of the more pertinent issues that may need to be discussed again in the future is “why are we doing it?”. This is a valid point that will probably need the full discussion with all members before we can commit resources further.
  • Website Update – Members were made aware of updates that includes Google Affiliation program and Amazon Affiliates membership. Both of these should generate a (small) income to the club for little bit of website real estate. Also a bit of tarting-up has taken place in an attempt to attract members to read it and the first book review has been posted. If any member wishes to write a review on a book with appropriate subject matter please feel free, don’t worry about uploading it to the website, I am happy to do this on your behalf.
  • Photo Shoot, Spring – Some images of spring were displayed and critiqued by those present, which lead to another interesting discussion. There was a general conclusion that members would like to see greater discussion/critique of their work (and others). So the intent is to generate more discussion on images taken, this may however require the number submitted to be limited if time constraints become an issue.
  • Mounting and Framing – A general discussion about the presentation of images and the cost of frames and mount rounded off the evening.

Light, Science and Magic

Light: Science and Magic: An Introduction to Photographic LightingThis is not the sort of book that will provide you with inspiration, but it will equip you with a thorough understanding of light, how to manage it and how it reacts to different surfaces. It's one of those books that you never quite finish reading but that you often refer to subsequently usually to help resolve lighting problems.
Highly Recommended.
Click on the image to go to amazon.
I welcome your comments on the inclusion of book reviews or thier content on our web site.

Website Stuff

Couple of things, the observant amongst you may have noticed, firstly the banner picture - it's Lacock Abbey and the floods - just thought it would improve the look of the website. If you have any suitable long thin images we can use here then please let me have them. Second thing, you may have noticed that there are some adverts in the bottom right hand corner of our blog, they are part of the "Adsense" program. What happens is Google put what they think are relevant adverts on our blog in a location of our choosing (hence the bottom corner) and in return they give us money,  now don't give up the day job just yet! I'm not sure how much money but it may pay for something, even if it's only a packet of chocolate digestives for club night. Please let me know what you think, we'll go with the general consensus.
